英国保育園でのお勉強：お城とドラゴンとお姫様！

娘の保育園で、１月と２月のテーマは、

"Castle, dragon, prince and princess"

とのこと。そして、教室の窓には、いろんなお城やドラゴンのイラストや、ディズニーのお姫様たちの絵が描いてあるとともに、英国のウィリアム王子とキャサリン妃の写真が貼ってあり、日本の保育園と皇室の関係性とはちょっと違う空気を感じました。

さて、このお城とドラゴンとプリンス&プリンセスってどういう関係なのかと思ったら、このお話を軸にしてアクティビティを行うということのようでした。



１９６０年代のヒット曲、Puff, the Magic Dragon（邦題：パフ）の歌詞に沿って２０００年代に出版された絵本です。私自身は、この曲自体は何度も聞いたことがあったけれど、歌詞の内容などは全然知りませんでした。

さて、歌詞などはネットで調べればそこら中の落ちているので、ここでは省略。ただ、英語の勉強ついでにと思って知らない単語を調べてみると、結構面白い英単語が使われていたので、ここにメモっておきます。

1. frolicked (動詞 frolicの過去形): to play and move around in a lively, happy way
2. rascal: (humorous) a person, especially a child or man, who shows a lack of respect for other people and enjoys playing tricks on them
3. sealing wax: a type of wax that melts quickly when it is heated and becomes hard quickly when it cools, used in the past for SEALING letters, etc.
4. perched (動詞 perchの過去形): (informal) to sit or to make somebody sit on something, especially on the edge of it
5. ceased (動詞 ceaseの過去形): (formal) to stop happening or existing; to stop something from happening or existing
6. sorrow: (rather formal) a feeling of great sadness because something very bad has happened
7. scale: (OF FISH/REPTILE) any of the thin plates of hard material that cover the skin of many fish and reptiles

ここで、へぇぇ、と思ったのが"scale"という単語。計りとかの意味が一般的だと思いますが、この歌詞では、ドラゴンの鱗を意味しています。そして、それ以外にも、歯石やそして湯垢もscaleと言うのだそうです。ロンドンは、水が硬水のため、お風呂場にも、そしてヤカンにも湯垢が沢山つきます。この湯垢を見る度にscaleという単語を思い出し、鱗と歯石を連想しています。
